Yokkaichi Bankoyaki Ware
In order to provide employment to impoverished residents, Yamanaka Chuzaemon, the head of Suenaga Village, widely promoted the manufacture of ware. As a result, the number of bankoyakiware manufacturers increased beginning in the early years of the Meiji period.
In later years, the industry became established in the region and sales of bankoyakiware from Yokkaichi expanded in Japan and overseas thanks to the development of Yokkaichi Port that provided an efficient transport network and the efforts of Kawamura Matasuke (a chemist turned entrepreneur) and renowned potters such as Sansuke.
