Urban Planning to Respond to Environmental Pollution Issues
Yokkaichi City drew up a specific plan for urban development based on the recommendations in the KurokawaTeam report. It was difficult to completely eliminate sulfur oxides (SOx) from the atmosphere using technologies available at the time. The main feature of the plan was to divide the city into an industrial zone and a residential district, and relocate residents when environmental pollution occurred in a particular area.
Based on the Yokkaichi City Urban Environmental Pollution Prevention Master Plan drafted in 1966, residents of Heiwacho and Amaikechowere collectively relocated, green buffer zone were created and large green spaces were preserved.
