Establishment of the Yokkaichi Cooperative Foundation for Air Pollution Prevention
Following the ruling that was passed on the Yokkaichi Air Pollution Lawsuit, the Yokkaichi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, at the request of authorities from Mie Prefecture and Yokkaichi City, looked into establishing a foundation that would be funded by companies to help air pollution victims.
The Yokkaichi Air Pollution Victims Association strongly opposed this move, pointing outthe issues associated with adopting a 'foundation' status and expressing their dissatisfaction over the inadequate measures in place to help pollution victims. Establishment of the foundation was however approved in 1973, and the system to pay compensation to pollution victims was implemented ahead of the Japanese government.
