Where was the Yokkaichi marketplace actually located? Tracing its history back to the Muromachi Period and based on documents from the latter half of the Edo Period, it was located in Kitamachi, Minamaimachi, Nishimachi and in Tatemachi, close to the National Route 1 Kitamachi intersection from the current Chubu Nishi Elementary School. Records dating back to the second half of the fifteenth century note its location in Yokkaichibaura and indicate close interaction between the port and the marketplace. We assume that the first market was held in Tatemachi along the road linking the port to Tokaido (called Hamaoukan Road since the Edo Period).
